2008 Great Salt Water Educational Outreach

Dear Educator,

My name is Teresa Morris. I am a teacher and Founding Director of Coastal Carolina Indian Center & Association.

Through the years we may have worked together within your respective classroom and/or your involvement with American Indian courses I’ve taught at Coastal Carolina and Carteret Community Colleges.

Some of you have shared excerpts in your class from my children’s book, Families of the Neuse: A Story of Two Friends, which was endorsed by retired senior writer of National Geographic, Harvey Arden, and North Carolina Education Chairman, Phil Kirk. Families of the Neuse celebrates life growing up in eastern North Carolina through the story of two friends, one with Native roots, the other, European. The two friends learn about living within our natural world and the importance of ongoing stewardship in preserving our state’s natural resources…today.

You may have also seen the documentary I participated in along with ECU retired professor Dr. David Phelps titled THE LOST COLONY: In Search Of Roanoke. Documentary was shown on the History Channel.

You are in receipt of this letter because of expressed interest in your students participating in the upcoming 2008-09 CCIC’s Great Salt Water Educational Outreach.

Approximately 2000+ students from surrounding counties attended the first ever Great Salt Water Educational Outreach at the Onslow County Fairgrounds in November 2004. Your class and/or students may have attended and received individual art and essay merit ribbons relative to areas of class study and native interest. Interest may have included various arts (primitive and contemporary) , architectural influences relative to natural setting, distinct clothing designs, powwow regalia for various dancers, linguistic groups of O-neh-weh-yuh-ka’s (North Carolina’s) first Tuscarora and Algonquian peoples.

With rising fuel costs etc. being a possible deterrent for schools facing budget crunches your students can still experience this unique Great Salt Water Educational Outreach. It will be our honor to go the distance in visiting your school and individual class. We believe this will provide a more intimate educational setting for your students that wish to examine a variety of artifacts, ask questions and learn about some of the fun and thrilling facts of North Carolina Indian history.

All students attending this very meaningful educational experience will be awarded the 2008-09 CCIC GREAT SALT WATER Educational Outreach Certificate and teachers will be given follow-up student quiz assessment.

Please indicate below your preference of month, week, date, time(s) you’d like a scheduled visit to your school-individual classroom as reservations are taking place now. (Allow approximately 45-90 minutes per classroom.)

Please have application request returned to us as soon as possible to insure visit upon your request.

Nya:weh, (Thank you)

Teresa Morris
