The Wild Horses of Shackelford Banks

In 2006, Coastal Carolina Indian Center was asked to suggest some names relevant to the traditional tribes of eastern North Carolina so the National Park Service (NPS) could go through the list and choose names for a new generation of wild horses at Shackelford Banks, which is the next island just east of where CCIC is based on Bogue Banks.

We came up with a long list of words and names and provided it to the NPS, and they, in turn, chose a few for some of the foals that were born last year.

CCIC considers it an honor to have been involved with the naming of some of the most recent generation of foals, who are said to descend from a core group of an old type of Spanish horses that first trotted on our shores over 400 years ago.
